Twp Assistant Surgeons same case

Good morning,



I am in need of supporting information regarding billing of two assistant surgeons on the same case. We have a cardiovascular surgeon and his usual partner working as an assistant (-80) along with an outside MD also working as an assistant (-80). Not really sure why the need for two assistants as these are standard CABG cases.



Can both assistant surgeons bill for the same CPT codes and be paid? Any information you may be able to provide would be appreciated.

Here in California, state law requires 2 assistants for CABG cases. We had to go all the way to the administrative law judge to get RR Medicare to cover our services. However, most other payors have covered with no question.

You may want to call your hospital and ask why 2 surgeons are used. If it is required by law, you should get a copy of the statute.
